The catch basin mural project aims to raise awareness about the harmful effects of illegal dumping in catch basins, which are a crucial link between city streets and waterways. Worcester’s stormwater system uses drainpipes to transport rainwater to various outfalls throughout the city, eventually discharging into nearby bodies of water such as lakes, ponds, and rivers. Unfortunately, many people treat catch basins like trash cans, disposing of litter, chemicals, dog waste, and other harmful items that end up polluting the waterways. Through art and murals, we hope to highlight the direct connection between catch basins and local water bodies, emphasizing the importance of keeping them clean and free of harmful waste. The project aims to educate the community and encourage people to think twice before discarding their trash in catch basins, which ultimately harms the environment and the water we depend on.
