The City of Worcester Named 2023 Sustainability Leader

The City of Worcester, one of Casella’s largest municipal partners across the country’s operating footprint, has received the 2023 Sustainability Leadership Award for improving recycling quality in the city by reducing contamination. Through its collaboration with Casella and the Worcester Green Corps, dozens of measures were deployed to enhance residents’ recycling habits. These initiatives included introducing new bins, distributing educational materials, curbside audits, bin tagging, and community events. As a result of this concerted effort, Worcester has witnessed an impressive reduction of almost 50 percent in recycling stream contamination. Such collaborative endeavors have set a benchmark for other municipalities in Central Massachusetts and beyond.

The Worcester Green Corps has been delighted to assist the city in promoting these recycling efforts. Our youth workers will be present in the city every Wednesday, which has been identified as the day with the highest contamination levels, to conduct recycling audits on residents’ bins. We can allocate resources to support these initiatives involving our youth workers due to the generous contributions of our sponsors: United Way of Central Massachusetts After School and Out of School Time Program, National Grid of Worcester, Major Bloom, and Canal District Alliance Inc. We sincerely thank them for their continued support in our endeavors to keep Worcester clean and green!
